Types of Curtain Wall System
Curtain walls are precast at a factory and assembled before they are brought to the site. Basically, there are two types of curtain wall systems depending on the method by which the components are assembled.
- Stick Curtain Wall System
- Unitized Curtain Wall System
Stick Curtain Wall System:
In this type of curtain wall system, the components are assembled piece by piece on the structure of the building. This system is mainly used for low-rise buildings or in small regions. This is due to the fact that for reaching higher elevations it is important to have exterior access. This system promises flexibility as it gives space for onsite adjustments. Though it has the advantage of low shipping costs, the labor and time consumption should not be underestimated as tend to run quite high.
Unitized Curtain Wall System:
In this type of curtain wall system, the parts are already assembled in the factory. The components are installed and brought as a single unit from the factory to the site. This negates the need for individual installation. The size of the unitized curtain walls is directly proportional to the floor to floor height of the structure. Popular in high-rise buildings, they don’t need external supports such as cranes or scaffolding. Only mini cranes or temporary hoist are needed. This system offers the benefits of quick construction and good quality as the components are manufactured in a factory setting. However, this type of curtain wall system tends to increase the shipping charges due to need for larger and better protection during transportation to the site.

It can absorb infrared rays; reduce the solar radiation entering the room; reduce the indoor temperature; light and beautiful; not easy to pollute; save energy; under the reflection of light, the room is not illuminated by strong light, and the vision is soft.
In addition, in the glass curtain walls of modern high-rise buildings, hollow glass is used in which coated glass (or low-e coated glass) is combined with ordinary glass, and the partition is filled with dry air. Insulating glass is a new type of building material with good heat insulation, sound insulation, anti-frost, moisture-proof, high wind pressure resistance, beauty and application, and can reduce the weight of the building. It uses two (or three) pieces of glass. Use high-strength and high-air-tight composite adhesive to bond the glass sheet to the aluminum alloy frame containing the desiccant to produce high-efficiency sound-insulating and heat-insulating glass. According to experimental testing, in winter, when the outdoor temperature is -10°C, the temperature in front of the indoor single-layer glass window is -2°C, while the temperature in front of the hollow glass window is 13°C; and in summer, the double-layer hollow glass can block 90% of solar radiant heat; although sunlight can still pass through the glass curtain wall, it will not feel hot when exposed to the sun. Therefore, rooms with hollow glass curtain walls can be warm in winter and cool in summer, which greatly improves the living environment.
The seat-mounted all-glass curtain wall is generally used in high-rise buildings of commercial buildings and office buildings, exhibition halls, etc.
